The Manusmriti — formally known as the Mānava-Dharmaśāstra — is one of the most consequential and contested texts in Indian history. Composed sometime between 200 BCE and 200 CE, it belongs to the genre of Dharmaśāstra : texts governing social duties, legal norms, and ritual conduct.
